1 JOHN 1:8 IN CONTEXT TO REFUTE EXCUSE FOR SINNINING

“If we say that we have no sin, we are misleading ourselves, and the truth is not in us.” Yoḥanan Aleph (1 John) 1:8 TS2009

If we pull this verse out, it contradicts the rest of the chapter as well as the all of 1 John.

“If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and are not doing the truth. But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Yeshua Messiah His Son cleanses us from all sin.” Yoḥanan Aleph (1 John) 1:6-7 TS2009

“If we confess our sins, He is trustworthy and righteous to forgive us the sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” Yoḥanan Aleph (1 John) 1:9 TS2009

“My little children, I write this to you, so that you do not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Intercessor with the Father, Yeshua Messiah, a righteous One.” Yoḥanan Aleph (1 John) 2:1 TS2009

“And everyone having this expectation in Him cleanses himself, as He is clean.” Yoḥanan Aleph (1 John) 3:3 TS2009

Everyone staying in Him does not sin. Everyone sinning has neither seen Him nor known Him.” Yoḥanan Aleph (1 John) 3:6 TS2009

The one doing sin is of the devil, because the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of Elohim was manifested: to destroy the works of the devil. Everyone having been born of Elohim does not sin, because His seed stays in him, and he is powerless to sin, because he has been born of Elohim.” Yoḥanan Aleph (1 John) 3:8-9 TS2009

We know that everyone having been born of Elohim does not sin, but the one having been born of Elohim guards himself, and the wicked one does not touch him.” Yoḥanan Aleph (1 John) 5:18 TS2009

Either the scripture contradicts itself or is being taken out of context.

Here is the context of 1 John 1:8.

“We announce to you what we have seen and heard, so that you too might have fellowship with us. And truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Yeshua Messiah.” Yoḥanan Aleph (1 John) 1:3 TS2009

“And this is the message which we have heard from Him and announce to you, that Elohim is light and in Him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and are not doing the truth.
Yoḥanan Aleph (1 John) 1:5-6 TS2009

If you use 1 John 1:8 to claim you or anyone is still in sin as a Follower of Yeshua then that contradicts 1 John 1:6 because Yehovah is light and the only way to have fellowship with Him is to walk in the light.

It is impossible to walk in light and darkness at the same time. It is impossible to go right and left at the same time. It is impossible to go north and south at the same time. Either your master is the devil or Elohim.

Either you are walking in the light or you are walking in darkness. If you are walking in darkness (sin) then you are not walking in the light and have no fellowship with Him.

“But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Yeshua Messiah His Son cleanses us from all sin.” Yoḥanan Aleph (1 John) 1:7 TS2009 (The free, yet conditional gift of Grace!)

We are commanded by Yehovah who is light to walk in the light as He is the light. Yehovah nor Yeshua would not command us to walk in the light if it were impossible to do so and if He did not desire us to do so.

IF and only if we are walking in the light as He is the light then the blood of Messiah Yeshua cleanses us FROM ALL SIN.

How can we claim to be simultaneously walking in the light and having His blood cleanse us from ALL SIN while still walking in the darkness of sin? Or do you not know what it means to be in the world, yet not of it?

“If we say that we have no sin, we are misleading ourselves, and the truth is not in us.” Yoḥanan Aleph (1 John) 1:8 TS2009

From the context of this passage and the rest of the book John is obviously referring to a person who is not walking in the light, but is walking in darkness out of right fellowship with the Father who is thus deceiving themselves and claiming they have no sin.

He tells them what to do in the next verse.

“If we confess our sins, He is trustworthy and righteous to forgive us the sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” Yoḥanan Aleph (1 John) 1:9 TS2009

It is impossible to be cleansed from all sin by the blood of Yeshua and still have sin (1 John 1:7). It is impossible to be forgiven of all sin and cleansed from all unrighteousness and still have sin (1 John 1:9). All means ALL.

The person who is claiming to be walking in the light and in fellowship with Him but is actually walking in sin and darkness is told not to deceive themselves and say to themselves and others that they have no sin when in fact they do. That person is told to confess their sins and forsake them and Yehovah is faithful to cleanse them from all his sin and all his unrighteousness.

“And you know that He was manifested to take away our sins, and in Him there is no sin.” Yoḥanan Aleph (1 John) 3:5 TS2009

He can not be in us and us in Him if we are in sin. Sin being transgression of the Torah!

Yes we can be free from sin, we can be righteous, we can walk blameless before Yehovah through obedience to and through and for Father and Son!

  1. May we walk in the LIGHT!!

    Yet in Your manifold mercies
    You did not forsake them in the wilderness.
    The pillar of the cloud did not depart from them by day,
    To lead them on the road;
    Nor the pillar of fire by night,
    To show them LIGHT,
    And THE WAY THEY SHOULD GO. (Neh 9:19)

    There are those who rebel against the LIGHT;
    They do not know its ways
    Nor abide in its paths. (Job 24:13)

    Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a LIGHT unto my path.
    (Ps 119:105)

    For the commandment is a lamp,
    And THE LAW [Torah] a LIGHT (Prov 6:23)
    The unfolding of your words gives LIGHT;
    it gives understanding to the simple. (Ps 119:130)

    To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak
    according to this word, it is because there is no LIGHT in them.
    (Isaiah 8:20)
